Stepping Stone No More

Stepping Stone No More

Girl of your dreams, not quite.
Never seem to be just right.
I’m just a stepping stone on your journey towards “her.”

Well, this stepping stone has had enough.
Your journey just got a bit more rough.
You best get off of me, you inconsiderate trampler.

I’d much rather ride into the warm sunset alone
Then continue my existence as a cold, forgotten stepping stone,
Being in your eyes nothing more than a sentimental error.

No desire of feeling your soiled foot on my preciously brilliant head.
My glorious ethereal wings spread, flying very free instead.
Want to be someone’s evermore, not the stone that came before.

His mother I will always, always be,
This adult man I see before me.
But my role is changing,
His escape he is staging.
Off to learn from the world.
His hand I can no longer hold.

Now, who will I be?
Now that I won’t have to be “mommy”,
Until now my most important role.
What will fill this emptiness, this hole?
My purpose must be redefined
As I leave that role behind.
